19th century French or Italian School, large oil on canvas in a beautiful gilt wood frame. C Dombre signed, dated 1852.

Stunning frame fully gilt with gold leaf, bright and clear colors. Our painting is very decorative but also very interesting for the story it tells. It shows the old Master Cimabue, walling in the Toscanian countryside and discovering young Giotto drawing. At that time, he still does not know his future apprentice Giotto will take his place one day... Our man richly dressed in 15th century fashion, accompanied by his assistants is meeting a charming farmer woman showing drawings just made by a young shepherd sitting on a rock. In the shadows an old woman holding a dog.

Note the attention paid to details : rich master's clothes and traditional costumes. It is a very decorative piece, a large size, which is fun to watch in detail.

Excellent condition ; both painting and frame are clean.
