Late 19th century French school, portrait of an officer of the 4th Hussards Regiment smoking pipe. Signature : E Detaille 1906. Beautiful gold leaf gilt wood frame. Early 20th century, 1900s.
Beautiful & very decorative painting, highly representative of the First Empire soldiers : Hussards used to wear cadenettes on both sides of the face (protection against sabers) and the mandatory mustache. Also, smoking tobacco was required since it kept them awake. Many details of the uniform: shako, pelisse and Legion of Honor.
It is in excellent condition ; canvas and gilt frame cleaned by our restorer.
